This design is similar to the bird on the old Irish penny, which was used as part the ‘Punt’ currency before the euro came in 2001. Old Irish money used to feature a different animal on the back of every coin, with the harp on the flip side. We called this design the ‘Belle Bird’ which we like to pronounce as ‘belly bird’! An original design by Lisa O’Connor.
