This design was inspired by the 9th Century Book of Kells. The book of Kells featured many beautifully intertwining birds – they were considered to be ‘messengers of the gods’, as they could go back and forth to Heaven. We like to pronounce these as the ‘Belly Birds’. The smaller bird is similar to the bird on the old Irish penny that was in circulation until 2001. All the old Irish currency (An Punt) had animals on them, unlike the euro coinage now which all have the harp on the flip side.
